Conquering the SSC OTR Portal: Photo Specs and Spectacle Rules
With the transition to the new One Time Registration (OTR) portal at ssc.gov.in, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) completely overhauled its document upload process. Whether you are aiming for CGL, CHSL, MTS, or Constable GD, the new portal is far less forgiving than the old system. The software now performs immediate checks during the upload phase, and thousands of candidates find themselves unable to proceed past the final application page.
Understanding the strict parameters of the SSC portal is vital. The commission no longer provides a correction window for major photographic errors, making your first upload attempt critical.
1. The Strict "No Spectacles" Mandate
The most drastic change in recent SSC notifications is the absolute ban on spectacles. The official guidelines explicitly state that photographs featuring spectacles—even clear, non-reflective prescription lenses—will lead to immediate form rejection. Many candidates assume this rule only applies to sunglasses, upload a photo with their daily reading glasses, and subsequently lose their attempt. You must remove all eyewear before capturing your application photo.
2. Proper Dimensions and Facial Framing
If you are uploading a pre-captured photo (rather than using the live webcam feature), the system demands exact precision. Your uploaded photograph must be 275 pixels wide by 354 pixels high, keeping the file size compressed between 20 KB and 50 KB.
- Ear Visibility: The SSC relies heavily on facial biometrics. Both of your ears must be clearly visible in the photograph. If you have long hair, tie it back or tuck it behind your ears so the sides of your face are unobstructed.
- Head Positioning: Look dead center into the camera lens. Side profiles, tilted heads, or looking slightly off-camera will fail the alignment check.
- Recency: Ensure the photograph was taken within three months of the exam notification date. The background must be plain white or a very light, solid color.
3. Signature Visibility and Compression
The signature file must be cropped to 140x60 pixels and sized precisely between 10 KB and 20 KB.
Because 10-20 KB is an extremely aggressive compression limit, many candidates accidentally ruin their signatures. If you sign lightly with a thin ballpoint pen, the compression algorithm will erase the fine ink lines, resulting in a blank or illegible box on your final printout. To survive the compression, sign your name firmly using a thick black gel pen or marker on stark white paper. This ensures the contrast remains high even after the file is reduced to 15 KB. As always, do not sign in block capital letters.
