JEE Main & Advanced: Avoiding NTA Form Rejections

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and Advanced represent the gateway to premier engineering institutions across India, including the IITs, NITs, and IIITs. Administered under the National Testing Agency (NTA), the JEE application system relies on automated identity checks and biometric cross-referencing. With intense competition, encountering a document discrepancy right before admit cards are issued causes immense distress.

The NTA's screening software rejects any file with improper pixel ratios, blurry contrast, or obscured facial biometrics. Formatting your documents correctly on your first attempt ensures smooth processing.

1. The 275x354 Photograph Dimensions

The NTA specifies an exact image canvas of 275 pixels wide by 354 pixels high for JEE applicants. The file weight must be maintained between 10 KB and 200 KB.

  • 80% Face Coverage: The NTA strictly enforces that your face must cover at least 80% of the image area. Frame the crop so your head and neck dominate the shot, with the bottom border ending right below your collarbones.
  • Ear Visibility: Both ears must be clearly visible. Ear shape and structure are used alongside facial recognition during exam-day verification. Pull back longer hair to keep both ears completely unobstructed.
  • Background and Contrast: The background must be pure white. Wear a dark or colored shirt to create clean contrast against the white backdrop; wearing a white shirt can blend your shoulders into the background and trigger a segmentation error.

2. Handling Spectacles and Eyewear

If you wear corrective prescription spectacles daily, you may wear them during your photo session, provided there is zero lens reflection obscuring your pupils. However, thick frames that block parts of the eye or cast shadows on the cheekbones will trigger a system flag. Tinted glasses, sunglasses, caps, and head coverings are strictly banned.

3. Signature Specifications (275x118 Pixels)

The JEE signature slot requires an aspect ratio of 275 pixels wide by 118 pixels high, with a generous file weight range between 10 KB and 100 KB.

  1. Sign using a dark black gel pen or bold ink pen on unruled white paper.
  2. Ensure the ink stroke remains unbroken and legible across the entire canvas.
  3. Crop closely around the signature before standardizing the dimensions to prevent excessive white space.
  4. Write in a natural running hand. Signatures composed entirely of capital letters will be rejected by the NTA.
