Decoding DSSSB Document Dimensions: The 5x7 Postcard Requirement
The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) operates through the OARS (Online Application Registration System) portal. Among all Indian competitive examinations, DSSSB is infamous for having the most highly unconventional and frustrating photograph requirements. Candidates frequently spend hours trying to force a standard passport photo into the DSSSB portal, only to be met with constant "Invalid Dimension" error pop-ups.
DSSSB does not want a standard passport photo. They demand a specific Postcard Size photo alongside dual thumb impressions. Understanding the physical layout of these requirements is the only way to successfully submit your OARS application.
1. The 480x672 Pixel Photograph
The core issue candidates face is the massive dimension requirement. The DSSSB photograph must be exactly 480 pixels wide by 672 pixels high, and the file size can range anywhere from a generous 50 KB up to 300 KB. This equates to a 5x7 inch physical postcard.
Because the height (672px) is significantly larger than the width (480px), you cannot simply upload a square photo of your face. If you do, the resizing algorithm will stretch your face vertically, making you look unnatural and leading to immediate rejection at the exam center.
- Upper Body Visibility: To fill this vertical space naturally, the photograph must capture your head, neck, shoulders, and chest area (up to the mid-torso). Your face should only occupy about 50% of the total image height.
- Background and Clothing: DSSSB guidelines mandate a plain white or off-white background. Furthermore, the board frequently conducts strict frisking at exam centers, banning full-sleeve shirts. It is highly recommended to wear a light-colored, half-sleeve shirt or t-shirt in your application photo to align with their physical exam-day dress codes.
2. Dual Thumb Impressions (Left & Right)
While banking and railway exams usually only ask for the Left Thumb Impression (LTI), DSSSB requires uploads for both the Left and Right thumb impressions. These must be formatted to 110x140 pixels, with a very tight file size restriction of 10 KB to 40 KB.
The most common mistake here is organizational. When you scan both thumbs, they look identical as digital files. Candidates frequently upload the left thumb into the right thumb slot and vice versa. Always rename your files immediately after scanning (e.g., "Left_Thumb.jpg" and "Right_Thumb.jpg") on your computer desktop before logging into the OARS portal.
3. Signature Dimensions
The signature file requires a dimension of 140x110 pixels and must also sit between 10 KB and 40 KB. Because this is a slightly taller box than standard signature requirements, ensure you sign with a bit of vertical height. Do not sign in a tiny, compressed straight line. Use a thick black pen on stark white paper. A thick pen ensures that when the file is compressed down to a small size, the ink lines do not break or fade into the background.
