UPSC CAPF (Assistant Commandants): Mastering the 350x350 Square Upload
The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) Assistant Commandants examination is one of the most prestigious uniform services tests conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Earning a Gazetted Officer rank in forces like the CRPF, BSF, or CISF requires passing multiple rigorous stages, beginning with a flawless online application. Because the exam is administered through the UPSC's central One Time Registration (OTR) portal, the document requirements are highly distinct from standard state-level exams.
The most common reason CAPF applicants encounter a hard stop or "Dimension Error" on the upload screen is due to the unique square-aspect ratio mandated by the commission for both the photograph and the signature.
1. The Square Dimension Rule (350x350)
Almost all competitive exams ask for a rectangular portrait photo—an image that is noticeably taller than it is wide. The UPSC completely breaks from this standard. For the CAPF exam, your photograph must be perfectly square, measuring exactly 350 pixels wide by 350 pixels high.
If you take a standard rectangular passport photo and forcefully compress its width to match its height using basic mobile tools, your face will appear completely squashed and horizontally distorted. The facial mapping software will reject a distorted face. To bypass this, you must use a dedicated cropping tool to extract a perfect 1:1 square from your original image before resizing the pixels to 350x350.
The file size must be kept between 20 KB and 300 KB. This massive 300 KB upper limit provides ample room to retain excellent image quality. Aim for a file size around 100 KB to ensure your printed admit card features a sharp image.
2. Photographic Content Rules
As a future Assistant Commandant, your application photo serves as your first official record. The UPSC frequently updates notifications to mandate a text stamp on candidate photographs. You must superimpose your full name and the exact Date of Photo (DOP) at the bottom edge of the image. The date cannot be older than 10 days from the notification release.
The background must be plain white or off-white. Look directly into the camera with a neutral expression. Ensure that your face covers roughly 75% of the square frame, with both ears clearly visible. Avoid wearing caps, dark glasses, or tinted lenses, as these will lead to automatic portal rejection.
3. The Square Signature Dilemma
Equally confusing for applicants is the signature requirement. The UPSC requires the signature file to also be a perfect square, measuring 350x350 pixels, bounded between 20 KB and 300 KB.
Do not sign your name in a tiny straight line and leave massive blocks of white space above and below it. While the file bounds must be square, your ink signature should occupy the majority of the visual space. Sign your name broadly and distinctly on unruled white paper using a dark black pen. Crop out excess paper edges before running it through a square formatter to ensure maximum clarity.
